B6 Censored Letters to Editor

Why this page?

In all free countries citizens are able to raise issues of public concern by writing letters to the editors of papers, even if the media do not cover particular issues. All the Fiji newspapers have a Letters to the Editor column, which ought to be of great interest to academics and those who study media censorship.

For two years before the September 2014 Elections, and some even after the elections, most of my letters trying to raise public awareness of important policy issues, especially those involving tax-payer funds, government accountability and transparency were censored and labelled here as (NOT PUBLISHED).

Most public queries, such as on the state-approved destruction of the marine environment for reclamation, have not been replied to by those in authority, a sad reflection of the deterioration of transparency and accountability in Fiji, since 2006.

It is a tragedy that what cannot be recorded here is the blatant censorship and self-censorship of my views by television and radio stations which frequently sought my views, before the Bainimarama intimidated them, by decrees, incentives and disincentives.
